Sentence building exercises, a good range of idioms, and ready-made essay structures for different topic types — I built my own list of idioms from this book that I still use. If you're serious about the writing section of the test, this is the most direct preparation I found.
The HSK5 writing section is where I see most people lose marks they didn't have to lose, and this book is the most direct preparation I found for it. I worked through the sentence-building exercises daily in the final month before my test and built a personal list of idioms and set phrases from the book that I knew I could deploy on any essay topic that came up. The essay structures it provides aren't templates to memorise — they're frameworks that make the blank page less blank. If you're serious about the writing section, this is not optional.
